NEAR AND FAR FIELD BACKGROUND DISCRIMINATION WITH THE RFD.

Abstract

Utilizing the pointing capability inherent in the MITHRAS developed RFD, a discrimination system was installed in a MITHRAS-built, four-inch tracker. Tracking tests on point sources, in the presence of simulated near and far field backgrounds, were conducted. General consideration is paid to the specific problem of near-field background noise and far-field background noise. Methods of predicting and describing these backgrounds are considered and reference is made to several interim reports by MITHRAS which are concerned with the detailed determination of the background characteristics, simulation of same, and experimental verification of the derived relations, as well as on the methods of background noise alleviation which have been investigated by MITHRAS under the present contract.
