RESEARCH ON ADVANCED OXIDIZERS HAVING KINETICALLY DERIVED STABILITY.

Abstract

Studies of the salts ClF2BiF6, ClF4BiF6, and products obtained by high temperature fluorination of Cl - Bi systems continue to indicate that a stable ClF6(+) salt is formed in the latter systems. The products are being characterized by elemental, infrared and X-ray analyses, thermal decomposition, hydrolysis and compatibility studies. A satisfactory solvent has not been found for NMR analysis. Brief efforts to form the ClF6(+) ion in combination with other fluoroanions have not been successful thus far. The BF4(-) salt does not appear to be attainable by direct fluorination at elevated temperatures, while studies of AsF6(-) and SbF6(-) systems indicate that very careful control of conditions may be required. Studies to establish unequivocal identification of the tentative ClF6BiF6 are under way. (Author)
