HIGH ENERGY PLASTICIZERS.

Abstract

A kinetic study of the rate of formation of the energetic plasticizer 2,3-bis(difluoramino)propyl 2,2-dinitropropyl carbonate has shown that it can be made in greater than 98 percent conversion in one hour at 100 C and under 350 psig N2F4. Kinetic data have been obtained at 100, 90 and 83 C. About 2.5 lbs Shell P722 have been made in a continuous unit. Product rate was about 66 g/hr. Conversions exceed 99 percent. The energetic nitrile 4,4,4-trinitrobut-1-y1 cyanoacetate is an effective nitrocellulose coplasticizer for Shell P722 and other difluoramino plasticizers. It can be synthesized in good purity from undistilled trinitrobutanol. Two new energetic plasticizers have been prepared from trinitrobutanol. These are 4,4,4-trinitrobut-1-y1 alpha, beta-bis(difluoramino)isobutyrate, having an impact sensitivity greater than 100 kg-cm, and cyanoethyl 4,4,4-trinitrobut-1-y1 carbonate an effective NC plasticizer with an impact sensitivity greater than 150 kg-cm.
