INVESTIGATION OF DECOMPOSITION CATALYSTS FOR 98% HYDROGEN PEROXIDE.

Abstract

Decomposition catalysts were developed and tested with 98% H2O2 for use in rocket applications. Both compressed powders and metal alloys were examined for catalytic activity in laboratory tests. The most active materials were then developed into forms suitable for rocket motors. Fifteen motor tests were used to evaluate the catalysts. One series of eight tests were used to screen new catalysts and modified catalyst pack configurations. A second set of tests measured the start response as a function of catalyst temperature before starting. The last series compared the performance of three different 98% H2O2 propellants when used with identical catalyst packs. One propellant contained a stabilizer. The motor tests included measurement of H2O2 flow, pressure drop, start response, and catalyst and chamber temperatures. (Author)
