IONIC FLUORINE CHEMISTRY.

Abstract

The experimental details necessary for the reaction of ClF5 and CsF to form CsClF6 have been further investigated. When highly dried CsF (Approx. 0.05 H2O) and ClF5 of an extremely low HF and ClF3 content are used in the product preparation the only reaction appears to be the formation of a small amount of CsClF4 due to the dissociation of ClF5. Thermal decomposition or treatment with HF of the reaction products did not give ClF5 as found in earlier work at Olin. Reaction of NOF (ClF5) with CsF has not been successful to date in producing products different from the uncatalyzed reaction. A gas chromatographic method is described for the analysis of impurities in ClF5. (Author)
