INORGANIC HALOGEN OXIDIZERS.

Abstract

Chlorine oxytrifluoride was synthesized from chlorylfluoride and perchloryl fluoride using a variety of fluorinating agents in a low-temperature uv reaction. The syntheses of ClF3O was also accomplished through uv reactions of ClF3 and O2 as well as from its constituent elements. Synthetic data and infrared (ir) measurements have led to the structural characterization of a number of complexes including ClO2AsF6, Cl2FAsF6, Cl2FBF4, C1F2OAsF6, RbClF4O, CsClF4O, ClF4AsF6, and ClF6AsF6(AsF5)x. New classes of compounds were prepared through the action of ClF on Fluoroalkyl carbonyls and thionyl tetrafluoride. Characterization and reaction data for RfOCl and SF5OCl are given. An improved synthesis of BrNO3 has led to more definite analytical data and physical properties. Similarly, improvements were made in preparing and characterizing FIO2 and IOF3. The physical properties and mass patterns for IOF5 and IF7 were accurately determined. (Author)
