LESSONS LEARNED, HEADQUARTERS, 173D AIRBORNE BRIGADE

Abstract

The 173d Airborne Brigade has continued to conduct operations aimed at locating and destroying Viet Cong, North Vietnamese Forces and installations. The Brigade, as I Field Force's reserve remained ready to meet any mission required and continued operations in the Brigade's TAOR (Tactical Area of Responsibility). The Brigade's Civic Action Program continued to play a key role in the Brigade's counterinsurgency efforts. To best accomplish its mission, the 173d Airborne Brigade conducted four major operations during the reported period. Operation Bolling, which commenced 17 September 1967 continues to be conducted in Phu Yen Province by the 4th Battalion, 503d Infantry and D company 16th Armor through the months of February, March and April to present. The Brigade minus continued to operate in the central highlands as a two battalion task force with augmented actions while participating in Operation MACARTHUR under the Operational Control of the 4th Infantry Division until April when they redeployed on Operation COCHISE and commenced a three Battalion operation in the Bong Son plains area. Operation WALKER, which includes the defense of Camp Radcliff at An Khe and the surrounding AO continued to involve one airborne battalion.
