Ionic Fluorine Chemistry.

Abstract

This report describes further attempts to prepare the ClF6(-) anion. The addition of ClF3 (up to 15%), HF (up to 1%), and F2 (at F2:CsF of 20:1) to the CsF-ClF5 system did not result in products containing the ClF6(-) anion. Fluorination of CsClF4 gave only ClF5. No evidence for CsClF6 was found in the solid residues. All evidence gathered to date indicates that CsClF6 does not form in the reaction system CsF-ClF5, or, if it does, it is not stable. An X-ray diffraction pattern of CsClF4 has been obtained and is reported and compared with a pattern previously published by other workers. (Author)
