Abstract

During this period a great deal of effort has also been devoted to improving the Q-32 computer and its laboratory environment. Memory protection by core bank was installed ont the Q-32. The PDP-1 peripheral computer came into operational use, and a large disc file was installed. We have also concentrated on increasing the reliability of the system for users of the TimeSharing System. This work and major efforts on the part of IBM have resulted in greatly improved system performance, as viewed by its users. Only rarely does an operation now have to be terminated before completion because of equipment malfunction. During the next six months we plan to continue this effort to improve the reliability of the computing equipment. We plan also to initiate changes in the timeSharing System to provide for some roll back and to give each user an option to specify whether he wants his program terminated if the system fails to read magnetic tape. Moreover, the addition of the disc file, which should be operational soon, will reduce our dependence upon magnetic tapes. (Author)
