EVALUATION OF SPERRY GM7 COMPASS SYSTEM IN THE DIRECTIONAL GYROSCOPE MODE

Abstract

The Sperry GM7 compass system incorporates the CL11 directional gyroscope and is roll stabilised by an external horizon reference. Trials of a GM7 operated as an unslaved directional gyroscope were conducted at Boscombe Down. The trials showed that the long term heading stability of the system was better than 0.3 deg/hr., that the short term stability was better than 0.6 deg/ hr., and that normal aircraft manoeuvres had little effect on the system's performance. They also revealed that certain precautions were necessary to obtain optimum results from the system.
