AUTOMATIC LANGUAGE TRANSLATION

Abstract

Accomplishments for 1962 in the development of the AN/GS6-l6 language translating cpmplex are described. This involved studies in linguistic research, conversion to a bidirectiotial single pass dictionary mode and, in its incipient stage, to a multipass mode. The search and programming techniques developed during the year. particularly the rapid subtable searching of core memory and the program for generative grammars, are described along with the basic linguistic researches into machine translation problems, compilation of data for the grammatical feature of government in Russian grammar, and generation of new grammar tables embodying grammatical analysis and sentence structure determination. Improvements made, and those contemplated, to machine components and to the system organization are also reported.
