LUNAR INFRA-RED MEASUREMENTS
Abstract
Following the successful development of techniques for producing multilayer interference filters for the infra-red out to 20 microns, a radiometer was designed and constructed to make observations of the moon in the atmospheric window 8 - 13 microns, using the 50-inch telescope at Asiago. The primary aim was to use this instrument to determine the emissivity of the lunar surface by measuring the radiant flux from the moon in two or more narrow spectral regions within this band. Due to unusually unfavourable weather conditions during the first observing expedition (the only one so far) this objective could not be achieved. A number of anomalous temperature distributions were however found, which appear to be associated with ray craters.
