AEROMECHANICS PROGRAM HEAT TRANSFER AND FLUID MECHANICS

Abstract

This report covers the major areas of: Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, and Arc Tunnel Facilities. Studies of the effect of various distributions of surface catalycity on heat transfer for frozen boundary layer flows of dissociated gas around hypersonic bodies are summarized. The fluid dynamics investigations include summaries of studies of expansion of gas clouds, three-dimensional boundary layers, electrical interactions of weakly ionized gas with solid boundaries, vortex flows, test time in shock tubes, and secondary injection for thrust vector control. Arc tunnel facility improvements include completion of the high capacity pumping system, implementation of the constant power control system, and design of an improved tests section and model/probe support mechanism.
