SUMMER PROGRAM IN OPERATIONS RESEARCH FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, 1956-1962,

Abstract

In 1956 a summer research program for high school students was initiated at the Operations Research Office (ORO). This program continued for seven summers through 1962, in which year it was under the Research Analysis Corporation (RAC), the successor organization to ORO. During the 7-year period 97 sophomores, juniors and seniors from local high schools have participated in the program. The tangible payoff of the program for ORO-RAC has been high. Their research efforts have resulted in 14 published and distributed regular ORO-RAC documents. In addition, students have been employed by the organization in sum mers subsequent to their participation in the program, and have authored or coauthored nine publications. An evaluation from the students' point of view is difficult; however, their reply to a survey indicates that participation in the program has had beneficial effects on their college, graduate school, and work career.
