TRACER STUDIES ON THE OXIDATION OF UO2 IN ACIDIC AQUEOUS SOLUTION

Abstract

Experiments were done on the oxidation of UO2 in acidic solution. UO2() has been shown not to undergo rapid exchange of oxygen with the sovent, at least when the concentration of U(V) is kept low. A tracer experiment was performed to determine to what extent UO2 -oxygen is retained in the UO2() which is formed. The in vestigation is not complete, nor are the results entirely satisfactory, but they are suggestive of some interesting effects and seem worth reviewing in their present form. Difficulties which limited the work appeared in the isotope analysis of the UO2(). A variety of blank experiments e performed. Results obtained were somewhat erratic.
