MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES, PHYSICAL MEASUREMENTS PROGRAM, PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE

Abstract

Studies on pyrolytic graphite were made with respect to its possible use as a re-entry heat shield material. Preliminary work is reported on changes in x-ray parameters and physical dimensions caused by heat treatment above the temperature of deposition. Data are presented which indicate that the pyrolytic structure becomes similar to that of natural graphite after treatment to 3000 C. Initial studies on structural changes as a function of time are reported.
