STUDY OF THE GENERATION OF COHERENT ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION BY A PULSATING PLASMA

Abstract

Coherent radiation from a plasma stimulated by a modulated electron beam at frequencies above the hybrid frequency was observed, with electronic gains of more than 20 db. The measurements were made in the 3.95-to 5.85-gc region. The cyclotron frequency was 2.90 gc and the hybrid frequency was less than 3.18 gc. The experiment was performed with a cesium plasma. The experiments, their results, and the experimental facilities are described. The facilities consist of an extremely versatile, demountable, bakeable vacuum system with a magnet which produces a highly uniform field over the region occupied by the plasma.
