THERMOELASTIC DAMPING

Abstract

The non-linear coupled field equations of thermoelasticity are herein solved for the quasi static behavior of a solid bounded by two paral lel planes. The mechanical energy converted to heat during each cycle of the loading process is explicitly evaluated and its spectral variation computed. From this exact solution an approxi mate, but quite general, expression for the thermoelastic energy dissipated in solids as a result of elastic deformation is developed.
