Abstract
A feasibility study was made on the use of a membrane electrode for the detection and measurement of pentaborane in air. A number of plastic films were tested, but none were found sufficiently permeable to provide a sensitive and practical sensing device. A method is proposed to convert pentaborane to hydrogen, which may then be sensed with the membrane electrode. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate that this method affords adequate sensitivity and retains all the advantages of the membrane electrode principle. The experimental work is now in progress on the rapid and quantitative con version of pentaborane to hydrogen.
