DISCRETE, FINITE REPRESENTATION OF A LINEAR, STATIONARY SYSTEM

Abstract

A linear system representation suitable for use with signals of finite dimensionality is described. This representation takes the form of a matrix with elements which depend both on the choice of signal basis and on the transmission properties of the system. The report is divided into two parts. Derivation of the system matrix for an arbitrary system transfer function for several widely-used signal bases and consideration for the case in which only the system matrix is known are presented. An equivalent representation, expressed in terms of a continuous parameter, is introduced to facilitate approximation of the system transfer function, and transformation formulas are established for a number of cases where they have a simple form.
