DEPARTURES FROM LTE IN EMISSION AND ABSORPTION BY CONTINUOUS ENERGY STATE RADIATIVE EQUILIBRIUM

Abstract

A general formulation of the theory of departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) in free-free emissions and absorption is developed. The problem is treated subject to the restrictions to steady state and radiative interactions. Particle distribution function and radiation field are studied separately, special attention is given to the transfer problem. The possibility of negative absorption (maser action) is discussed.
