ABSORPTION OF SEISMIC WAVES.
Abstract
Seismic energy may be absorbed in several ways, including crystal phase change, compaction of porous media, fracturing within the medium, fric tion involved in the relative motions of different parts of the same rock, viscous losses through fluid flow in a porous medium, and temperature change through compression and dilation of the medium. Empirical absorption formulas based on field measurements and results of laboratory work on energy absorption are discussed. The author draws several general conclusions on the nature of seismic energy absorption and discusses them mathematically. (Author)
