INTERIM TECHNICAL REPORT ON THE RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, AND FABRICATION OF TUNNEL EMISSION CATHODES

Abstract

Efforts were continued on the development of materials and processes for the fabrication of tunnel cathodes. Vacuum system problems that developed without warning were solved and major improvements in the vacuum system were made in order to obtain much better vacuum conditions during the deposition of metal films. As a result of these and other changes, it was possible to make insulating films of high cur rent-carrying capacity with reassuring regularity. A series of tests was made to determine the effects of substrate temperature, evaporation rate, accelerator material, and other variables.
