A STUDY OF TARGETS FOR MACHINE PRODUCTION OF 14-MEV NEUTRONS

Abstract

A study was made of available target materials suitable for production of an intense pulse of 14-Mev neutrons by the D(T, n)He4 reaction. A basic requirement of the target is that it be inexpensive enough to be expendable. The target types studied were clathrate, zeolite, tritiated organics, and metallic tritides. The study indicates that synthetic zeolite in which tritium oxide (T2O) is absorbed would provide the required yield and would be inexpensive enough to be expendable. Experimental studies of such a target are recommended. (Author)
