PLASMA PROPERTIES IN THE PLUME OF SOLID PROPELLANT MOTORS CONTAINING CsNO3 AND KNO3

Abstract

Three series of tests were conducted at the Naval Research Laboratory high-altitude chamber to measure the performance of Al:CsNO3 and Al:KNO3 solid-propellant rocket motors. Motor operating parameters were measured. The plume was probed with a microwave system to measure the electron density at an ambient pressure of 1 torr. The plume electron density profile as a function of radius and the recombination rate as a function of radius were determined. Electron densities of the order of 10 to the 12th power cu cm and recombination rates of the order of 10 to the -8th power cu cm/sec were measured.
