HYDROTHERMAL SYNTHESIS OF HYDRATED CALCIUM BORATES,

Abstract

A limited investigation was made of the synthesis of calcium borate hydrates. The following hydro thermal reactions were performed: (1) Ca(OH)2 H3BO3 H2O from 200 to 350 C produced priceite (4CaO.5B2O3.7H2O), compound I (CaO.3B2O3.2H2O), compound II (3CaO.7B2O3.3H2O), compound III (4CaO.7B2O3), and compound IV (unknown). (2) Meyerhofferite (2CaO.3 B2O3.7H2O) in H3BO3 solution from 85 to 250 C produced nobleite (CaO.3B2O3.4H2O), gowerite (CaO.3B2O3.5H2O), ginorite (2CaO.7B2O3.8H2O), compound IV (un known), synthetic (2CaO.3B2O3.H2O) and compound II. (3) Borax (Na2B4O7.10H2O), gypsum (CaSO4. 2H2O), and H2O from 125 to 340 C produced priceite, calciborite (5CaO.4B2O3), and anhydrite (CaSO4). (4) Gowerite in H3BO3 solution from 170 to 360 C produced ginorite, compound I, synthetic (2CaO.3B2O3.H2O), and compound III. Ginorite was converted to synthetic (2CaO.3B.H2O) and compound III in H3BO3 solution at 360 C. (5) Reactions of borax, calcium iodate Ca(IO3)2, and H2O at 70 and 200 C produced meyerhofferite and priceite, respectively. (Author)
