PREPARATION OF TE SYNTHETIC STRONTIUM ISOMORPH OF COLEMANITE AND OTHER RELATED STRONTIUM BORATE HYDRATES,

Abstract

The chemistry of the strontium borates has been studied, and a new ferroelectric strontium borate hydrate (2SrO.3B2O3.5H2O) has been synthesized. This compound is the strontium isomorph of cole manite (2CaO.3B2O3.5H2O). The following series of reactions were investigated: (1) reactions of borax and strontium iodate, (2) miscellaneous conversion reactions in borax and boric acid solution, (3) reactions of ammonium pentaborate and strontium nitrate, and (4) reactions of ammonium pentaborate and strontium iodate. Five compounds produced by the above reactions were: compound I (2SrO.3B2O3.5H2O), compound II (SrO.I2O5.O.5H2O), compound III (SrO.3B2O3.4H2O), compound IV (SrO.3B2O3.4H2O), compound V (SrO.B2O3.4H2O). Compound VI (SrO.B2O3.4H2O) was prepared by other methods. Compound III is dimorphous with compound IV; compound V is dimorphous with compound VI. (Author)
