SYNTHESIS AND PYROLYSIS OF METAL ALKOXIDES AS POTENTIAL REFRACTORY OXIDE COATINGS FOR GRAPHITE

Abstract

The vapor phase deposition of hafnia and zirconia on graphite substrates by decomposition of the isopropyl and tertiary butyl alkoxides was in vestigated. The infrared spectra of the isopropoxides-zirconium and hafnium were obtained. Thorium isopropoxide infrared data were also obtained and the spectra compared with titanium and aluminum isopropoxides. The tertiary but oxides show more promise for coating applications because of their higher vapor pressures. The vapor pressures and decomposition temperatures of the zirconium and hafnium butoxides were studied. Preliminary data on the oxidation re sistance to 1000 C of various grades of graphite coated by this method are reported. The results indicate a potential route to more protective refractory coatings than currently available.
