A Problem of Random Accelerations

Abstract

The partial differential equation yu(x)u(yy) 0 is solved in a vertical strip. The method is first to solve the equation in the upper and lower halves of the strip. By matching u and u(y) across the x-axis a singular integral equation for u(x)(x,0) is obtained. This is converted into an equation with Cauchy kernel whose solutions are known explicitly.
