INEQUALITIES FOR PERIODIC SURFACES OF VECTOR FIELDS,

Abstract

Relations are discussed between invariant sub manifolds of a class of vector fields on a closed manifold M, and the betti numbers of M. When the vector fields in question are gradient fields of nondegenerate functions on M, then our in variant submanifolds become the critical points of the function and relations the Morse In equalities. For Morse Smale Dynamical Systems our submanifolds are the critical points and closed orbits of the vector field and the re lations become the Smale Inequalities. (Author)
