PLANNING GUIDES FOR DUAL-PURPOSE SHELTERS

Abstract

This document provides general planning information relative to the principal factors which must be considered in the development of group fall out shelter facilities. It discusses a number of possible methods for dealing with each factor. Emphasis is placed upon the potential dual-purpose use of facilities usually available within existing structures. The information which is provided is designed to permit the shelter planner to select specific methods for meeting each shelter requirement according to the needs and opportunities dictated by his particular situation. The planning areas discussed in the report include: radiological protection, other weapon effects, temperature and atmosphere control, water supply, food, lighting, fire protection, medical, sanitation, communications, sleeping facilities, warning and shelter entry, and organization and management.
