THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC STUDIES FOR A REFRAC TORY MATERIALS PROGRAM,

Abstract

Thermodynamic and kinetic data which are required to describe the chemical behavior of the zir conium and hafnium carbides and0ides at temperatures to 3000K and in atmospheres of O2, O2 H2O, Cl2, HF, F2, H2, CO, NH3, and N2 are presented. Preparation of high purity ZrC, ZrO2, HfB2, and HfC are described. Experimental low temperature heat capacity data for ZrC and heat content data for ZrB2 from 410 to 1126K are presented. Current status of calorimetric, electron diffraction, equilibria, and spectros copy studies are reported. (Author)
