TEST OF WHEEL ADAPTERS FOR THE OFF-ROAD WHEEL AND TIRE CONVERSION KIT.

Abstract

Presented is all testing performed on the wheel adapter, a component of the Off-Road Wheel and Tire Conversion Kit. The kit permits a tractor semitrailer to be equipped with 14.75 X 20 desert tires in lieu of the 1x 20 standard military highway tires. The tests of the wheel adapter, as part of the kit's evaluation, were carried out to fulfill a requirement for improved off-road mobility of TC vehicles. Tests were conducted in four phases: (1) X-ray analysis of the material, (2) static load tests, (3) dynamic load tests, and (4) magnaflux inspection of casting. Tests were conducted at Fort Eustis, Virginia, and Camp Wallace, Virginia. Inspection and analysis of the wheel adapters indicated a sound material free of defects. No failures occurred during any of the static or dynamic loadings. It is con cluded that the wheel adapters are of more than sufficient strength to permit a tractor-semi trailer to be fitted with desert tires. (Author)
