A TWO-VARIABLE GENERATING FUNCTION FOR COMPUT ING THE SAMPLING PROBABILITIES OF A CLASS OF WIDELY USED STATISTICS,

Abstract

A method of finding the exact sampling probabili ties of a class of statistics widely used in the analysis of frequency data is presented. A two variable generatiction is described from which the exact sampling probabilities of a particular statistical form can be obtained. In this expression, k is the number of categories, n sub i is the number of independent observa tions in the ith category, and D and E are single-valued functions of their arguments. The information measure, H, is representative of this class of statistics. It is anticipated that presently unavailable tables of significance for several widely used statistics can be assem bled using the proposed generating function in conjunction with a digital computer.
