RADIATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO ENERGY AND MOMENTUM TRANSPORT IN A GAS,

Abstract

The radiative contributions to energy and mo mentum transport in a gas are obtained for quite general conditions. In deriving the basic equa tions the particle or photon approach is used. This brings out the strong similarity to the der ivation of the matter contributions to the en ergy and momentum transport equations by taking the appropriate moments of the material particle Boltzmann equations. The results for several limiting situations are studied. Some of the concepts of use in treating the radiation passing through a boundary or surface are discussed. A discussion is given of the approximation of local thermodynamic equilibrium and some of the special problems which arise when this approxi mation breaks down. (uthor)
