OPERATOR-EQUIVALENTS,

Abstract

The method of operator-equivalents that is used to evaluate matrix elements of the form JM T JM is discussed. Here, T is the mth component of an irreducible tensor operator of rank , and JM is a total angular momentum state. An operator is constructed from the spherical components of so that it is patently a spherical tensor. The equivalence between T and is discussed, and the relationship of the latter to a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient is obtained. A method for generating the is developed. This method is used to obtain a general expression for for - 6 m and arbitrary; the evaluations of these re sults, specifically for 1 6, are tabulated. (Author)
