SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET RESEARCH AND APPLICATION TO MHD POWER GENERATORS.

Abstract

Research concerns an investigation of the recently developed superconducting magnets and their ap plication to MHD power generators for space use. The work will include theoretical analysis of an MHD generator with particular emphasis on the magnetic field requirements and a study of the problems of superconducting magnet design to fulfill these requirements. To attain this end, models of a superconducting magnet, cooling equipment and an MHD generator will be analyzed. The total power system including a reactor heat source and radiator will then be optimized on a power to weight basis to find the optimum mag netic field. With this completed, a comparison will then be made between superconducting magnets and conventional magnets to illustrate the ad vantages or disadvantages of both. (Author)
