THE INFLUENCE OF SPLENECTOMY ON THE PERIPHERAL BLOOD RESPONSE AND SURVIVAL OF ANIMALS SUBJECTED TO WHOLE BODY X-IRRADIATION,

Abstract

Splenectomy either before or immediately after exposure of dogs to 225r results in less depres sion of the peripheral platelet andhte cell values. When dogs are given doses approximating the LD sub 100-30 a tendency toward less hematologic depression is still noted but is much less evident than at the lower dose. Splenec tomized dogs appear to show slightly better sur vival following irradiation but larger groupsimals are needed to give statistical con firmation to this impression. Splenectomy of monkeys prior to receiving 600r resulted in slightly less fall in hematocrit, but no sig nificant differences insurvival or platelet and white cell levels. Rabbits spenectomized prior to an LD sub 78-30 dose of 1000r showed less depression of the peripheral blood elements and an increaed0-day survival, while splenectomy immediately after exposure resulted in neither. The favorable influence of splenectomy on radia tion injury is considered most likely due to the removal of the normal inhibitory influence of the spleen on the bone marrow. (Author)
