FAR-FLOW APPROXIMATIONS FOR PRECURSOR IONIZATION PROFILES,

Abstract

Feastures of two far-flow models that have previously been introduced to account for the presence of precursor ionization ahead of a hypersonic shock front are examined. These models are based, respectively, on photoioniza tion of the upstream gas by shock radiation, and the diffusion of charges from the actively ionized region. Neither model involves the active shock directly, so their implications are useful mainly in estimating the shape of precursor ionization profiles. (Author)
