SOLID-STATE TECHNIQUES FOR MODULATION AND DEMODULATION OF OPTICAL WAVES.
Abstract
An optical am - fm converter using rutile has been successfully demonstrated at high UHF modulation frequencies. A traveling wave quartz modulator of light has been successfully demonstrated at high UHF modulation ffrequencies. The use of 'optical mixing' in a helium-neon gas phase laser as a modulation detection tool has proven quite successful. For example, Pockel's modulation aat 910 mc has been monitored with a detector capable of responding to only a few hundred megacycles, by this method. Analysis of broadbanding photodiodes reveals a constant amplitude banddwidth product for single tuned photodiodes regardless of the center frequency. Multituning as well as the use of 'optiical heterodyning' can improve on the constant. Microwave wideband photodiode circuits have been designed and are presently in the process of being tested. Modulated light from a gallium arsenide light emitting diode transmitted along a one meter air path has been detected by a silicon photodiode at 650 mc. (Author)
