THE TESTING OF HIGH STRENGTH STEELS FOR HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENT AFTER DIFFUSED NICKEL-CADMIUM PLATING,

Abstract

This test indicates that increasing the diffusion time at 630 F to 250 min tends to decrease the embrittling effect of the nickel cadmium plating but diffusion times in excess of 250 min do not cause any further improvement. Stress relieving at 375 F for 24 hr. after the 30 min diffusion treatment at 630 F does not relieve the hydrogen embrittlement. None of the processes utilized in this test succeeded in completely relieving the hydrogen embrittlement caused by the diffu sion nickel cadmium plating. (Author)
