THE ELECTRICAL BEHIOR OF REFRACTORY OXIDES.

Abstract

The research described was an attempt to gain a better mechanistic understanding of charge and mass transport in non-metallic, refractory mate rials, particularly metal oxides. Special re search instrumentation was developed to permit measurements of electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power under conditions of con trolled oxygen partial pressure and temperature. A special apparatus for determination of voltage transients and long time polarization was also developed. The solid solution ZrO.85Ca0.15O1.85 was shown to be an intrinsically pure oxygen ion conductor at temperatures above 100 C. The polarization technique developed under this pro gram was used to investigate the mixed ionic and electronic conduction. (Author)
