FABRICATION OF ULTRAFINE BERYLLIUM WIRE

Abstract

The results of six months work directed toward development of a process for the production of ultrafine beryllium wire by warm drawing techniques are described. Clad drawing was found to be unacceptable. Using conventional drawing techniques, long lengths, 200 feet and over of 0.0018 in. diameter, shorter lengths, 50 to 25 feet of 0.0015-in. diameter, and very short length, under 2 feet of 0.00115-in. diameter beryllium wire were produced. The mechanical properties of drawn beryllium wire between the sizes of 0.010 and 0.001497-inch diameter are described.
