THE SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF THE ABSORPTION OF SOME NAPHTHYL SILANES IN THE ULTRA-VIOLET REGION
Abstract
Two synthesis schemes were used to prepare eight related naphthylsilanes. The basic absorption and emission properties of these compounds were investigated in the ultra-violet region. These properties include molecular extinction coefficient determinations, fluorescence of glass silanes, fluorescence in cyclohexane and EPA at 298 and 77 deg K, and phosphorescence in EPA at 77 deg K. Also mean lifetimes of phosphorescent bands were determined. Molecular extinction coefficient calculations indicate the 1-naphthylsilanes absorb light in direct proportion to the number of naphthalene molecules attached to the silicon atom. No apparent correlation in the absorption of the 2-naphthylsilanes exists. Fluorescence spectra of the 1-naphthylsilanes indicate bands comparable to those of naphthalene.
