RESEARCH ON ANTIRADIATION DRUGS.

Abstract

Forty-seven new compounds were synthesized and submitted to the contracting agency for evalua tion as potential antiradiation drugs. Also, ad ditional quantities of two compounds previously submitted were resynthesized for furthur evalua tion. The compounds were mainly N-substituted derivatives of 2-aminoethanethiol and included alkylaminoethanethiols, hydroxyalkylaminoethane thiols, aminoalkylaminoethanethiols, and N,N' bis(2-mercaptoethyl)alkylene-diamines. General synthesis routes included (a) thiolethylation of amino compounds with ethylene sulfide; (b)alkyla tion of amines with benzyl 2-chloroethyl sulfide and amination of halides with 2-(benzylthio)eth ylamine, followed by debenzylation; (c) amina tion of epoxides with 2-(benzylthio)ethylamine, 4-lowed by debenzylation; and (d) amination of 1-2-(benzylthio)ethylaziridine with amino com pounds, followed by debenzylation.
