MATERIAL DAMPING UNDER BIAXIAL STATE OF STRESS GENERATED BY COMBINED AXIAL AND INTERNAL PRESSURE LOADINGS

Abstract

A test machine was constructed which measures material damping in thin-walled, cylindrical specimens subject of combined internal pressure and axial cyclic loading. The purpose of this machine is to allow the complete range of biaxial stress states to be developed, so that the individual damping effects of distortional and dilatational straining action might be clearly discerned. Experimental results on a series of manganese alloy specimens are found to display significant damping effect associated with dilatational straining.
