HYDROGEN GENERATION FOR FUEL CELLS.
Abstract
An improved more rugged prototype portable hy drogen generator utilizing ammonia feed was built and successfully operated. Continued investiga tions have shown that the design requirements of 4 SCFH of hydrogen can be producted. The unit was operated at a pressure of 35 psig, corres ponding to the vapor pressure of ammonia at 22 F. The generator utilized residual hydrogen to supply the process energy requirements. The air for combustion was supplied by an aspirator. De sign conversions and hydrogen yields were ob tained with thermal efficiencies, defined as ratio of gross heating value of hydrogen to gross heating value of fuel, of about 60-65%. In vestigations on hydrocarbon fuel have shown that it is possible to reform JP-4, jet fuel, and ob tain conversion levels and hydrogen yields suf ficient to operate a generator at specified de sign conditions.
