AN INVESTIGATION OF NOZZLE CONFIGURATIONS FOR A RADIATION COOLED HELIUM ARC JET,

Abstract

Experiments were conducted to compare the per formance characteristics of three arc jet nozzle configurations with respect to one another. The nozzles tested in this experiment were the conical, horn and contour. The test results clearly show that the overall performance of the conical is better than the other designs. Al though no optimum performance was sought or was achieved, the conical nozzle was found to have a higher I-sub sp/power input, greater kinetic ef ficiency, lower weight and better stability in the ranges of power and mass flow tested.
