A VERSATILE FIELD ION MICROSCOPE,

Abstract

An all metal design of the field ion microscope has proven to be both feasible and versatile. Adaptibility, variable magnification, ruggedness, greater safety when used with liquid hydrogen cooling, and high voltage shielding characterize this model. A 6 inch diameter vertical screen, which is easily replaceable, facilitates its use. Application of this model to the study of dif ferent screen materials, the use of solid nitro gen cooling, and the study of grain boundaries is described. (Author)
