STUDIES OF FACTORS INFLUENCING RAINWETTING OF SIDING.

Abstract

Efforts concerned studies of factors influencing rainwetting of siding and an evaluation of moisture control in wooden buildings to prevent decay. The following conclusions were made: Eave width was the most important single factor affecting rainwetting of siding; the use of an eave gutter added little to the effectiveness of roof overhang; a 3-minute dip in a water-repellant preservative prevented decay under severe exposure but permitted small amounts of paint peeling; in-place treatment was less effective than the 3-minute dip and cannot be recommended for moderate to severe exposures; and the peeling of thick paint films cannot be prevented by in-place water-repellent treatments.
